Centre for Museums, Heritage & Material Culture Studies
The Centre was originally established three years ago as an expression of shared research interests of staff and students across the Department of Anthropology, Institute of Archaeology, and UCL Museums and Collections. The Centre was relaunched in 2010-11 to enable it to become a more dynamic, agenda-setting ‘centre of excellence’, including developing its research activities (in line with the re-organisations taking place in Archaeology and Anthropology), expanding its membership (including members outside UCL and in the professional sector), and developing a new seminar series that seeks to reach a wider audience across London. Examples of existing and anticipated areas of research interest include: • Contemporary/critical museology and museum anthropology • Cultural heritage and memory studies • Cultures of materials • Culture and development • Object/collections-based research and pedagogy • Digital museology and curatorship • Ethnographic exhibition and installation • Art and design
