Dr McDonald was appointed as Senior Lecturer in 2008 and Academic Head of Prosthodontics in 2009.  She served on BSRD Council 2000-2003 and most recently served as a  REF sub panel member for REF 2013.

Research Summary

Dr McDonald is interested in Zirconia and collaborates with the Biomaterials unit exploring its innovative aspects. Her clinical research focuses on ageing of dental hard tissues, tooth restorability and the influence of acid erosion and bleaching agents on teeth. She also works with Microbiology in the evaluation of oral carriage of MRSA and innovative modes of decontamination.

Teaching Summary

Dr McDonald was appointed as Academic Head of Prosthodontics in 2009.  She was co-Director of the MSc in Implant Dentistry 2008-9, Director MSc Conservative Dentistry 2010-12, Director of MClinDent Prosthodontics 2009- present. Specialty Advisor in Restorative Dentistry North London, Royal College of Surgeons, Eng 2007-12. She has been an examiner for IQE EDI 2005-7, MFDS RCS 2005-8, MJDF 2009-11. Currently she is external examiner for FFD (Pros) RCSI.
Within Prosthodontics she leads teaching learning and assessment using innovative methods. Dr McDonald is a member of the Institute of Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (2003-). Dr McDonald served on BSRD Council 2000-2003 and most recently was a  REF sub panel member.
