Research Summary
Eukaryotic cells are divided into membrane-bound compartments called organelles. Each organelle performs a specific function, and requires a particular set of proteins and lipids to perform this function. Our overall aim is to identify and understand the molecular machinery that sorts proteins within the cell and sends them to the correct location. Correct protein sorting is essential for many processes including the control of cell proliferation and functioning of the immune and nervous systems: defects in these processes often lead to disease. In addition, many viruses exploit protein trafficking pathways for their entry and/ or exit from the cell. Our research can be divided into two main themes: 1) Ion gradients across intracellular organelles and their role in protein trafficking; 2) Protein sorting at the multivesicular body (MVB).
Teaching Summary
I am course organizer of the final year undergraduate project courses: BIOC3002 and BIOC3027 and the accompanying second year course BIOC2009.

I lecture on BIOC2001, BIOC2002, BIOL2014, BIOC3005 and ANAT3050 and run tutorials for BIOC2001 and BIOC1007.

I am part of 4 PhD student programmes: the LMCB graduate programme, the programme in Developmental and Stem Cell Biology, the Wellcome Trust programme in Structural and Molecular Biology and the BBSRC programme in Structural, Computational, Cell and Chemical Biology.  I do tutorials/ journal clubs for these programmes and teach rotation students in the lab.
