Research Summary

Eukaryotic cells are divided into membrane-bound compartments called organelles. Each organelle performs a specific function, and requires a particular set of proteins and lipids to perform this function. Our overall aim is to identify and understand the molecular machinery that sorts proteins within the cell and sends them to the correct location. Correct protein sorting is essential for many processes including the control of cell proliferation and functioning of the immune and nervous systems: defects in these processes often lead to disease. In addition, many viruses exploit protein trafficking pathways for their entry and/ or exit from the cell. Our research can be divided into two main themes: 1) The trafficking of the ZIP family of iron/ zinc/ manganese transporters in health and disease and 2) Ion gradients across intracellular organelles and their role in protein trafficking.

Teaching Summary

I am deputy course organizer of the final year undergraduate project courses: BIOC3002 and BIOC3027.

I lecture on BIOC2001 (Molecular Biology) and BIOC2003 (Further Topics in Biochemistry), and run tutorials for BIOC2001.

I am part of several PhD student programmes: the LMCB graduate programme, the Wellcome Trust 4-year Interdisciplinary PhD Programme, the BBSRC London Interdisciplinary Doctoral (LIDo) programme in biosciences and the UCL-Birkbeck MRC Doctoral Training Programme
