Research Summary

As a biophysicist with expertise in scanning probe microscopy, I am  interested in understanding how the nanoscale properties of tissues shape their macro-scale behaviour. My research is centered on the nano-metrology of collagen in health and disease including ageing and syndromes. Other research interests include nanoscale characterisation of (bio)materials, interactions between cells/bacteria with implants' surfaces as well as damage assessment of collagen-based artefacts in Cultural Heritage.

Current Research topics in Bozec's group:

  • Nano-Histology of collagen tissues affected by rare syndromes using atomic force microscopy : Ehlers Danlos, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Scleroderma and ARC Syndrome (with Professor Gissen, Dr Parekh and Dr Stratton - UCL, Professor Grahame and Dr Kazkaz - UCLH)

  • Impact of Advanced Glycation End products on the phyiscal and mechanical properties of collagen tissues (human and model) at the nanoscale. (with Professor Birch - UCL)

  • Development of an AFM-based assay to investigate cellular adhesion (single bacterium and STEM cells) on clinical and non-clinical surfaces. (with Professor Donos, Dr Brett and Dr Spratt - UCL)

  • Damage assessment of historical and modern parchment samples - Development of novel conservations strategies. (with Dr Odlyha - Birkbeck College)

  • Evaluation of Optical Coherence Tomography as a diagnostics tool for dentistry and its applications to dental anomalies. Use of Synchrotron Facilities (With Dr Parekh - UCL, Dr Al-Jawad - QMUL and Drs Cook and Festy - KCL)

  • Failures  and bleaching of dental enamel:  diagnostics and modelling. (with Professor Van der Heijden and Dr McDonalds - UCL)

As a keen Researcher and Mentor, i am always interested in new applications of nanometrology in the field of Materials Science and Regenerative Medicine and encourage potential PhD applicants to contact me directly.

Finally, i have a strong interest in transmitting our basic research to  future generations and , as such, am keen to support any public engagement activities with school, or patients groups for example.
