Ataxia Centre of Excellence Award AtaxiaUK 10-NOV-2005
Description
The London Specialist Ataxia Centre has been established by Dr. Giunti and received accreditation from Ataxia UK in 2005. The criteria for accreditation were developed by Ataxia UK. Requirements for accreditation include continuity of care (the development of a relationship with a specialist neurologist is invaluable to patients), regular monitoring on an annual basis, support by a specialist nurse, a holistic multidisciplinary approach and with a strong transnational research component to improve the understanding of the treated the diseases. On this model three other ataxia centers have been created ( Newcastle, Sheffield and Oxford)

The Ataxia Centre was created as an attempt to concentrate research and expertise. In partnership with the patient support group, Ataxia UK, the Ataxia Centre was established with the aim of creating a robust translational service. This framework has served for many research projects from basic to observational and transnational.
