Biography
Ayda Afshar joined the Biomaterials Processing Laboratory of Professor Mohan Edirisinghe and completed her Doctoral research on the development of multifunctional and binary polymeric fibres for wound healing and bone tissue regeneration in non-union bone fractures. While singular polymer systems showed potential in biomedical applications, they were not without limitations. As a result, Ayda critically reviewed 'Binary polymer systems for biomedical applications' for an invited IMR journal (IF 19.56), focusing on the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of polymers in order to address the needs of biomedical applications, for which she was awarded an honorarium from Taylor & Francis. Following that, Ayda conducted extensive research and optimised the binary polymer system to enhance drug delivery, which can be applied to a wide range of biomedical engineering applications. Ayda conducted her PhD research in a multidisciplinary environment, collaborated with healthcare professionals and institutions in the United States and Europe, and delivered significant scientific discoveries. Ayda has over four years of experience in project management, teaching, supervision, academic research, and writing. With great joy, in recognition of her academic excellence, Ayda was awarded the prestigious Maryam Mirzakhani Scholarship for Women in STEM. Furthermore, her outstanding and fluent presentation to a large audience earned her first-place prize at the UCL Mechanical Engineering Conference.
