  • Research Fellow
  • Faculty of Arts & Humanities
I hold a BA in English Language and Literature from Damascus University, an MA in Translation, Languages and Cultural Studies (Arabic, German and English) and a PhD in Translation Studies from Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany. After finishing my PhD, I joined UCL as a Marie Curie postdoctoral research fellow in 2021.
Research Summary

My research interests lie in the area of translation theory and ethics, literary translation and self-translation, philosophy, history, and politics of translation (studies), especially in relation to questions of power and the significance of translational action within the dynamics of intercultural exchange. My first book, From the Target Text to the Source Text: the Problem of the Retroflex Effectiveness of Translation (2020) is a theoretical and philosophical investigation of the relationship between source and target texts/authors and translators and the performative invisibility of translation in the source-cultural context. My current research focuses on the intersection of translation, memory and migration in the context of Anglophone Arab literature and contemporary practices of cultural translation and mediation by Arab migrant authors in Britain. I published articles on theoretical and historical aspects of translation in a number of international translation studies journals, including Transletters, Chronotopos, and Lebende Sprachen. I also published an Arabic translation of a collection of short storeis by German author Herta Müller (Niederungen/Isqatat, 2012). My research project, Translation and Memory: Strategies of Remembering and Forgetting in Contemporary Arab Migrant Literature (Marie Curie 2021-2023) is funded by the European Commission's programme Horizon 2020, with Prof. Kathryn Batchelor as a mentor.
