Alejandro is a Venezuelan physician with training in infectious diseases and Tropical Medicine. In the UK he completed his MSc in Infectious and Health in the Tropics at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (Distinction) and obtained the Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the Royal College of Physicians. He gained his PhD from University College London in 2006. At the Centre for Clinical Research in Infection and Sexual Health he is a Principal Clinical Research Associate working on both academic and commercial clinical trials on HIV and other infections. At the MRC Clinical Trials Unit at UCL he is a Senior Clinical Scientist working on national and international clinical trials on treatment of HIV disease and other infectious diseases.




Randomised Clinical Trials on management of HIV infection and associated complications; Treatment strategies for HIV infection; Adverse effects induced by anti-retroviral treatment, particularly those related with mitochondrial toxicity; Management and prevention of HIV infection in resource-limited countries.
Alejandro is involved with postgraduate teaching activities as module coordinator and examiner board member at the UCL ICTM MSc programme on Clinical Trials. He is also teaches clinical research methodology in collaboration with academic institutions in Latin America.
