Research Summary
I am interested in understanding how the neural architecture of the retina sustains visual function and how, in conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), loss of input from rod/cone photoreceptors leads to alterations in downstream neural circuitry. In addition to rods and cones, a third class of photoreceptor has recently been identified in the mammalian retina. These intrinsically light responsive melanopsin retinal ganglion cells (mRGCs) can make an important contribution to light perception in visually impaired patients suffering from dysfunctions in rod, cone or retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells. We are currently investigating how these important new photoreceptors respond to the age-dependent loss of rods and cones in animal models of RP/AMD. In addition to work on the underlying pathology of retinal degeneration, I am also interested in developing cellular and molecular approaches for stabilising retinal circuitry and restoring function to the diseased visual system.
