Biography

I graduated from Novosibirsk State University with a Bachelor’s degree in 2000 (NSU, Department of Chemistry, Ecology and Environmental Management). Then I graduated from NSU with a Master’s degree with honours in 2002 (Department of Chemistry and physical chemistry). In 2002 I was awarded with a medal for the best Master thesis of Russia. In 2002 I entered in internal postgraduate course at the Trofimuk United Institute of Geology, Geophysics and Mineralogy of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Science (UIGGM SB RAS). Also in 2002 I was awarded a scholarship and a research grant of the Novosibirsk Region Government for post-graduate students (2002). Then in 2004 I received a PhD in geochemistry. I worked at the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy SB RAS on various interdisciplinary projects since 2000. I have been worked on material characterisation, metal speciation and recovery from a variety of industrial wastes from energy-from-waste facilities at UCL for about 2 years (2012/2013), on projects funded by UCL, industry and the Environment Agency. Now I am working under EPSRC/NSFC project "Understanding metabolism of toxic metals in co-processing".

Research Summary

I have experience in interdisciplinary research which includes geochemistry, environmental geochemistry, chemistry, hydrochemistry, analytical chemistry, biogeochemistry and material science. I investigate element behaviour in natural and technogenic systems, for example, elements migration, mobility and species as well as substance transformation, water-rock interaction, geochemical barriers and other. Moreover, I have >10 years of research experience in material characterisation using a complex of different methods (wet chemistry, microwave leaching and digestion of solid materials, AAS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, IC, SEM/EDS, XRD, TG-DTG-DSC, FTIR, etc.); development of different methods (mechanical, chemical, and thermobaric treatment) for modification of natural materials intensifying sorption properties; development of the sequential extraction procedures in order to investigate element species in natural and waste materials. Also part of my research is focused on the biogeochemical aspects: biogeochemistry of Altay’s lakes, lakes at the Baikal region and Novosibirsk reservoir; the role of the biogenic factor of element accumulation and biominiralization in soil, peat, sapropel and iron-manganese nodules. The considerable part of my research is focused on the development of cost-effective methods of industrial solid waste and wastewater remediation on the basis of cementitious materials (Portland cement, fly ash, lime), natural (clay, peat, limestone, zeolite, iron (III) hydroxide, etc.), modified materials (peat-humic agent (PHA), organic-mineral complex, activated carbon, etc.) and wastes (fly ash and biomass ash). For example, a novel environmentally friendly method to treat AMD and remove metals from it was proposed using the peat-humic agent with subsequent thermal treatment (Patent N2011139274, RU).

Using a holistic approach in environmental investigation is very important in order to understand clearly behaviour of elements in the environment and solve different important issues concerned with, for example, element speciation, water-rock interaction, land and water pollution, etc.
