Biography

Alex is a consultant eye surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London and specialises in complex and bilateral cataract surgery, corneal surgery including laser eye surgery and eye emergencies. His research interests are cataract and laser eye surgery including, including national guidance and outcomes analysis. 

Alex was ranked no.2 globally for top eye surgeons under the age of 40 by The Ophthalmologist. 

Alex qualified as a doctor from St George’s Hospital Medical School, London with a double Distinction and 1st Class BSc (Hons). His Ophthalmology training was initially on the south London rotation before moving to Moorfields Eye Hospital in 2007 where he underwent 10 years of additional training. During his Higher Surgical Training at Moorfields Alex worked as a Specialist Registrar whilst completing his PhD at University College London, and later became an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer; and Fellow. 

Alex undertook fellowship subspecialist training in Cataract, Glaucoma and Corneal transplant surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital. Alex also worked as a part time refractive surgery fellow to Mr Julian Stevens, and also as a full time refractive surgery fellow and also as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in LASIK, SMILE and cataract surgery at the London Vision Clinic. He now works at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London and was appointed as a Consultant in 2015.

Mr Alex Day is on the UK General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register, became a Member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (MRCOphth) in 2007 and later a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) in 2013. He also holds the Royal College of Ophthalmologists DRCOphth, Royal College of Ophthalmologists Certificate in Laser and Refractive Surgery (CertLRS) and the Ulster University Postgraduate Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery (PGDip CRS, Distinction). He is an examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ CertLRS examination.

Research Summary
Mr Alex Day is internationally recognised for his research in cataract and refractive surgery. He was ranked no.2 globally by The Ophthalmologist as a Rising Star in 2017. 

Alex is an Honorary Associate Professor at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, London. He has published over 60 papers in peer reviewed medical journals. He was responsible for the concept and formation of the group behind the Femtosecond laser Assisted Cataract Trial (FACT). This is a £1.5 million NIHR funded multicentre randomised controlled trial of femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) vs conventional phacoemulsification cataract surgery (standard ultrasound cataract surgery). 

Alex is an examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Certificate in Laser and Refractive Surgery. He was the lead author on the previous Royal College of Ophthalmologists National Ophthalmology Database publications on cataract surgery outcomes that provide national benchmarking standards for visual outcomes and complication rates. Alex is a lecturer on the Ulster University Postgraduate Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery (PgDipCRS) course.
