Biography

I received my PhD from the London School of Economics in 2011 after completing my BA, MSc and MPhil degrees in Turkey and Greece. Prior to joining UCL, I taught and worked as a researcher at the London School of Economics and the European University Institute.

Research Summary

My research focuses on history of financial markets, evolution of international financial and monetary institutions, and long-term economic change in the Middle East and Southeast Europe. I am the co-investigator of the research project entitled “Democracy, autocracy and sovereign debt: How polity shaped government-creditor relations in the first age of globalisation” supported by the British Academy Newton Fund. My other recent collaborative projects include a multidisciplinary and comparative history of the Middle East and South Asia from 1600 to 1914; and the evolution of the housing market in the Ottoman Empire since 1600.

Teaching Summary

I teach a range of modules on global financial and economic history since 1700 and economic history of the Eastern Mediterranean since 1600.
