I am Professor and Honorary Consultant in Obstetrics and Maternal Fetal Medicine at Institute for Women’s Health, University College London (UCL) and UCL Hospitals, London, UK. I trained in medicine and qualified from St Andrew’s University, Scotland in 1989 with an Intercalated BSc in Medical Science and from Manchester University in 1992 when I was awarded MB ChB. I did specialty training in obstetrics and gynaecology in London (NW Thames London Deanery). I completed a PhD on fetal gene therapy in 2005, and then undertook subspecialty training in maternal fetal medicine at UCL with Professor Charles Rodeck as supervisor, becoming a consultant in 2008. I was awarded an NIHR Clinical Senior Lectureship in Women’s Health in 2008 and was promoted to Professor in 2016. I became Head of Research Department for Maternal Fetal Medicine in 2016 and Director of the Institute for Women's Health in 2018.
I am Director of the UCL Institute for Women's Health where I lead the Prenatal Cell and Gene Therapy Group. The aim of the research is to develop prenatal treatment of severe and life-threatening disorders, and to investigate their efficacy, safety and consider ethical issues. Developments: new ultrasound guided injection techniques to delivery therapy to the fetus before birth; maternal VEGF gene therapy to treat fetal growth restriction; fetal stem cell transplantation; new imaging for fetal surgery and fetal diagnosis. My clinical research is on prediction and prevention of preterm birth, management of fetal growth restriction and fetal surgery.
I teach both undergraduate and postgraduate clinicians and scientists, at UCL and other institutions. I am an accredited Educational Supervisor within the London Deanery.
I am Education Supervisor for UCL medical students and I teach 4th year UCL medical students and intercalating medical students. I host projects for UCL intercalating medical students and BSc students, Special Study Modules for final year medical students from UCL and other medical schools, and medical student elective projects.
Within the Institute for Women's Health MSc courses I lead a module and teach on several others. I lecture on other UCL MSc courses including Institute of Child Health MSc in Cell and Gene Therapy.
I supervise PhD students within Institute for Women’s Health, Institute of Child Health and UCL Centre for Medical Image Computing (CMIC). I am a tutor for the UCL British Heart Foundation 4 year PhD Studentship in Cardiovascular Biomedicine, and the UCL Doctoral Training Programme in Medical and Biomedical Imaging a joint PhD programme between CMIC and Centre for Advanced Biomedical Imaging (CABI). I lead the Clinical Programme for Fetal Imaging, Academic Board of the UCL EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Medical Imaging and the UCL Institute for Healthcare Engineering Gynaecology and Obstetrics Flagship theme.
