- Professor of Vocational Education and Work
- IOE - Education, Practice & Society
- UCL Institute of Education
I joined the IOE in 2013 as Professor of Vocational Education and Work. I was appointed Pro-Director (Research and Development) in 2014, stepping down from this role in April 2021. I am the founding Chair of UCL's Collaborative Social Science Domain. In the earlier stages of my career, I held research appointments at the Universities of Lancaster and then Leicester before moving to the University of Southampton in 2004 where I became Director of Research and Professor of Education and Work in the School of Education.

My research interests are in the field of, education – work transitions, apprenticeship, workplace learning, vocational education and training (VET). I have been researching and publishing in these fields for over 25 years focusing in particular on issues of quality and progression. My recent research includes directing an ESRC funded project looking at ‘employee-driven innovation’ and learning in the healthcare sector, a study of older apprentices for the Nuffield Foundation, participation in a Cedefop funded cross-national research on adult apprenticeship in 28 countries, and exploring the relationship between apprenticeship and social mobility for the Sutton Trust. I am regularly consulted by policy-makers on vocational education and apprenticeship policy and am part of a Department for Education expert group advising on the introduction of the new T Level programme for 16-19 year olds wishing to develop expertise in a broad occupational field.
