I am a lecturer and research fellow at the UCL IOE Knowledge Lab and am originally from Canada. Before beginning my academic career, I received professional training and industry experience as a biomedical communicator, illustrator, and media designer. Specifically, in 2008, I earned a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Illustration from Sheridan Institute of Technology, where I specialised in scientific and technical illustration — my undergraduate work focused on explaining the implications of climate change on human health through illustration to provoke behavioural change. In 2012, I completed a professional Master’s in Biomedical Communications from the University of Toronto, where I designed, developed, and evaluated a web-based study aid-game for medical students studying human vascular anatomy, with a focus on how game design motivated study aid engagement, a deeper understanding of anatomy, and fundamentally changed students’ approach to studying the material. Finally, I completed my PhD in Medical Science in 2018, where I investigated the impact of game design on conceptual change of undergraduates’ misconceptions about molecular environments. I have also been fortunate to work in industry at Imagineeringart Inc. (a scientific and medical illustration firm) and Bridgeable (a service design firm), both in Toronto, Canada.

My research investigates how the design of visual media can manipulate—for better or worse—the ways in which people think, feel, and behave. I am interested in how the design of data visualisations, interactive media, and game-based learning environments in science and health domains can help people resolve complex misconceptions that hinder future learning and decision-making. Particularly, an emerging theme of my research relates to environmental sustainability and how to engage young people in climate action. As a producer of visual media, my mixed-methods research aims to uncover empirical links between the design decisions that we make as creators and the cognitive processes that they support (or inhibit).
At the UCL IOE Knowledge Lab, I am currently tutoring on the MA Educational Technology programme in the "Researching Learning Design", "Digital Design Thinking and Making", and "Design and Use of Technology in Education" modules, as well as supervising MA students in this programme.
My prior teaching experience has largely been in the realm of biomedical/scientific illustration and media design, as well as data and information visualisation, having led and assisted on multiple modules (at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels) at the University of Toronto Mississauga.
My PhD students focus on data-driven technologies learning and the role of visualisation and interaction design, with recently admitted students focusing on environmental sustainability in this context.
