I am currently the Subject Leader of the Computing PGCE Secondary and undertake supervision of dissertations on the Masters in Teaching programme.

I have previously run and  contributed to masters modules in the Strategic Leadership of ICT in Education, Issues in ICT education and Design and Use of Interactive Multimedia.

I am currently external examiner for the Computing PGCE, University of Reading and have previously been external examiner for Brunel University, Warwick University, St Mary’s and Brimingham City University. I have examined a range of provision including PGCE, GTP, Schools Direct Salaried and SCITT. I have also contributed to the IoE’s BA in Education, the foundation degree programme and run a range of short courses in the field of digital technologies.

Research and engagement with Computing education

I have engaged with a range of research projects in the field of digital technologies funded by the European Union, Department for Education, Teacher Training Agency, Canon Research Europe, British Telecom and Research Machines.

My current research focus is ‘Towards a curriculum for a digital age’ and social informatics available at:

My recent research has focused on:
Cognitive frameworks for understanding the nature of the subject 'Computing'
Forces acting to shape the Computing curriculum at school level
Girls perceptions of the subject
The relationship between curriculum aims and pedagogy

This intersects with my ITE work where students develop their critical understanding of the nature of the curriculum. The work encompasses the nature of digital knowledge, digital ethics and the forces in schools shaping Computing pedagogy. I am involved in a range of ventures with the British Computer Society (BSC), Computing at Schools (CAS) and the National College for Computing Education (NCCE).

Previous experience

Before coming to the IoE I was the Head if ICT/Computer Studies for 17 years in two London schools. I held the whole school responsibility for staff development and served as Subject Mentor to ITE students and worked as the Professional Coordinating Mentor overseeing the development of student teachers across the school. I have also worked as an ITE tutor for the Urban Learning Foundation. I have managed and worked on a range of school-industry projects including for the London Docklands Development Corporation, the London Grid for Learning and the LBWF CLC project £16m. I have also worked in an advisory role as part of the local authority School Improvement Team and managed the development of the LBWF City Learning Centre as part of the Excellence in Cities programme and and other large scale digital infrastructure projects in educational contexts
