I am a clinical
professor in medical education, University College London Medical School (UCLMS). I am
responsible for the leadership and strategic direction of UCLMS focusing on postgraduate
medical education, research and scholarship and the Medical School Education
Consultancy (MSEC). My academic leadership roles include:
- Head of Divisional Research and Director of the Research Department of Medical Education (RDME)
- Deputy Director UCLMS and member
UCLMS executive providing strategic leadership for our Division,
including undergraduate and postgraduate activities.
- Academic Lead Postgraduate programmes and Scholarship
- Sub Dean Quality Assurance
- Member of MSEC board and project lead
- General practitioner


My research area
is medical education; an emerging and vital cross-disciplinary field. I have
established the Research Department of Medical Education (RDME) and in 2014 was formally appointed as the Head of Division for Research and have worked over recent years to
establish the department as an international centre for excellence, with
its outputs shaping health care policy, doctor’s education and training, patient
care and pedagogy nationally and globally.
Impact: My work has impacted
on NHS policy and professional practice, for example:
“Understanding stakeholder perspectives on the GMC’s approach to quality assuring medical education and training” resulted in a new approach to how quality assurance in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education (see Crampton et al. 2020, https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/9/12/e033614)

to practice medicine.
I work across undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
Undergraduate
The MBBS programme has on average 2000 medical students. It educates in partnership with Faculties across UCL and in collaboration with the NHS. I and my team ensure that professional and educational standards are met, reward excellence in teaching, and provide support when standards are not met.
Postgraduate
I am lead for postgraduate programmes and scholarship, which includes providing leadership for the development of all Doctoral and Masters programmes and Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
