Research Summary

My research area is medical education; an emerging and vital cross-disciplinary field. I have established the Research Department of Medical Education (RDME) and in 2014 was formally appointed as the Head of Division for Research and have worked over recent years to establish the department as an international centre for excellence, with its outputs shaping health care policy, doctor’s education and training, patient care and pedagogy nationally and globally.

Methodological expertise:  including professional transitions in medical education and training, the impact of service reorganisation on training, quality in education and training, assessment, differential attainment and fairness in progression (including linguistic influences on examination success), professionalism, workplace learning, the employment of locums in the NHS, and medical regulation (appraisal and revalidation.

Impact: My work has impacted on NHS policy and professional practice, for example:

Griffin, A. et al (2015) was cited in Sir Keith Pearson’s review of medical revalidation “Taking revalidation forward: improving the process of relicensing for doctors” (January 2017) which impacts on 191,680 doctors who have need a licence to practice medicine.
