Biography

Dr Achala Gupta is a Research Fellow in Education, Practice and Society department at UCL Institute of Education. 

Achala has a PhD in Sociology (National University of Singapore), MA in Social Work (Tata Institute of Social Sciences), and MPhil in Educational Research (St. John's College, University of Cambridge).

Research Summary

My research focusses primarily on education delivery system(s) and practices, educational (in)equality and (im)mobilities. I have worked on education-related projects across various societal contexts, and published my work in leading journals as well as as book chapters, and policy papers. 

  • I am a member of the Eurostudents project (http://eurostudents.net/) that explores how higher education students are constructed in six European countries (England, Ireland, Germany, Denmark, Spain, and Poland). 
  • Before joining the project team, I worked on a study of Global Asian Universities and International Students’ Mobilities (in Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and China) at Asia Research Institute in Singapore. 
  • My doctoral research was an institutional ethnography of 'shadow education' in which I examined education practices in the formal education system from the vantage point of private tutoring (‘shadow education’) in contemporary India. 

Teaching Summary

I have offered teaching support (as teaching assistant and guest lecturer) in UCL and NUS. At NUS, I served as a Teaching Assistant (2013-2017) in the Sociology Department for the following modules: 

  • Qualitative Inquiry, 
  • Social Thought and Social Theory, 
  • Urban Sociology, 
  • Making Sense of Society, 
  • Gender Studies
