Andrew Eder is Emeritus Professor of Restorative Dentistry and Dental Education and formerly Honorary Consultant at UCL Eastman Dental Institute. He is also Chair of Trustees at the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges.
Most recently, Professor Eder was Pro-Vice-Provost and Director of Life Learning with responsibility for short courses, professional development and executive education across all academic departments at UCL. During Professor Eder's five year tenure (2012-17), UCL showed the highest percentage increase in short course activity across the Russell Group.
Prior to this, Professor Eder was Director of Education and Continuing Professional Development at the Eastman with responsibility for all educational activity across the Institute. During Andrew's ten year tenure (2002-12), he was recognised for excellence and innovation in teaching and learning at UCL as a recipient of a Provost's Teaching Award (2010).
As a Specialist in Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics, he also maintains a referral specialist Private Practice in Central London. Professor Eder has a special interest in the aetiology, demographics and clinical management of patients with tooth wear and, in particular, those patients with compromised function and aesthetics as well as sensitivity. He is Co-Editor of the BDJ book on Tooth Wear (2022).
Academic interests have included innovative methodology and technology in teaching and learning and the impact of training on patient outcomes in clinical practice. Professor Eder has served on the Editorial Boards of the British Dental Journal and the European Journal of Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry.
Professor Eder is a past President of Alpha Omega, the Royal Society of Medicine’s Odontological Section and the British Society for Restorative Dentistry. He is also Chairm of the Alpha Omega Charitable Trust and received an award for Global Philanthropy in 2017. Professor Eder has been an elected Faculty Board Member at RCS England (2017-22) where he is also Chair of the Board of Examiners for the Restorative Specialty Membership Examinations.
Educational Research: developed a local researchtheme studying graduate education amongst dental professionals looking at: (1)outcomes and feedback, (2) group dynamics and (3) innovative technology.
Clinical Research: primarily associated with the aetiology and management ofpatients with tooth wear in association with supervision of M-levelgraduate projects.
(1) Recipient of a Provost's Teaching Award in 2010 for Excellence and Innovation in Teaching and Learning at UCL;
(2) Teaches and examines on UCL graduate programmes and contributes to specialty training;
(3) Chair of the Board of Examiners for the Restorative Specialty Membership Examinations at the Royal College of Surgeons of England;
(4) Tooth Wear (co-editor) book; 113 articles, posters or abstracts; 236 press releases (856 published); 2 book sections;
(6) Recognised Teacher of the University of London and Member of the SubjectArea Grouping in Medicine.
