Biography
Abril is a socio-cultural researcher with particular expertise in case study analysis and Participatory Action Research (PAR). She has a multidisciplinary background with a Ba in Political Sciences, an MA in Cultural Studies, and is currently finalising her PhD at the Bartlett School of Architecture-UCL, assessing the levels of access and use of Internet in disadvantaged communities in the UK. In Mexico, she has worked with PAR and community-based research on topics of social empowerment, development and poverty alleviation. In the UK, she has acquired broad experience on UX design of physical spaces and public engagement and coordinating events of science communication. Her research interests include: implementing and assessing strategies to generate engaging and engaged scientific research, participatory ways to capture small data, data feminism, and working with structural inequalities in communities.

At the moment she is working on the European Union’s H2020-funded project TIME4CS which aims to increase knowledge on the actions leading to Institutional Changes in Research Performing Organizations (RPOs) necessary to promote Public Engagement and Citizen Science in science and technology. She also collaborated on the European Union’s H2020-funded project EU-Citizen.Science, on the coordination of online training and resources for citizen science – by the community, for the community.
