I brings a wide range of skills and a diverse academic background. I initially qualified as chemist for industry and then spent a number of years teaching material science to conservation and art history students.  In 2003, I gained a first class honours degree in Construction Management from the Bartlett and then followed this with a law conversion and qualification as a barrister. In 2005, I returned to the Bartlett and is now I consider I am ideally placed to lecture first year law and materials as well as lecturing and developing the area of sustainability. I am also interested in buildings once occupied and consider this is an area that needs greater attention if the impact of buildings on the environment is to be reduced. I currently run the undergraduate programmes in project management and I have been the Faculty Tutor for Admissions for a number of years.

Research Summary

Over the past few years I have been involved in research considering the impact of organisational culture on health and safety within large contracting organisations. I have also contributed to discussions on the development of a design language for architects. My current research interests are towards changing people's attitudes and how this may impact on the amount of carbon generated by buildings in use. I am also involved in research that is looking at the provision of basic eco design training to construction manufacturing SMEs.

Teaching Summary

During my time at the Bartlett I have taught across a range of different subject areas and for a number of years was responsible for teaching the first year material's module. I still contribute a few lectures to this module and I am particularly interested in the way materials change over time as well as the impact this has on the care of historic buildings. I have also taught first year law and enjoy introducing student's to the English legal system and why law is important.

Everyone is now aware that the climate is changing. The sustainability modules are designed to give and overview of the problems these changes are causing now and into the future, as well as considering the part the construction sector has in reducing its carbon dioxide emissions and the emissions of the buildings it produces. I also do the occasional lecture to the Part 3 Architecture students specifically in sustainability.

I contribute to a third year module on built asset management and I believe that not enough focus is placed on buildings once they are occupied. This is an area that I hope can be developed further.
