Biography

A historian by training, I am an Associate Professor (Teaching) at the Academic Communication Centre, (research and development) and HE consultant. I work with UCL faculties to support students' academic communication. I am also involved in several EDI projects, and collaborate with the Nahrein Network to support research capacity in the field of heritage in Iraq.

From 2007 to 2019, I founded and led various academic programmes for international students: UCL foundation programme in the humanities and social sciences (the UPCH), UCL Centre for Preparatory Studies in Astana, Kazakhstan, a Pre-Masters programme in heritage for UCL Qatar, and a Pre-Masters in Architecture in collaboration with the Bartlett.

I have also worked with the Arena Centre for Research-Based Education regularly since 2014, and was an assessor of the Higher Education Academy (HEA, now HE Connect) until 2019.

I am an Associate Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

Research Summary

My current research focuses on international higher education, in particular how to support and develop academic literacies, criticality, reflexivity and research autonomy in internationalor "diverse" contexts. I am interested in EDI and decolonial approaches, and ways to craft spaces of learning that empower students and validate under-represented voices.

My research interests also include collective memory and contemporary interpretations of the past, modern myth and epistemic violence, and the “crisis of the mind” in interwar Europe.

My PhD (UCL, 2007) examined political mythology and urban hermeneutics in the context of post-revolutionary France.

Teaching Summary

I have over twenty years of experience teaching all levels, from pre-undergraduate to PhD, and designing programmes and courses in history and politics as well as in academic literacies.

I have taught at UCL Department of French: 'The Making of Modern France' (cultural history 1789-1968 and institutions and political parties); 'Literature in Context'; 'Citizenship and Nationhood'.

I have designed and delivered courses and modules in European history and politics at pre-undergraduate level (UCL international foundation course), undergraduate level (“The European Apocalypse: 1914-1942”), and pre-masters level ("Collective Memory") for UCL Qatar.

I have designed and delivered postgraduate courses on dissertation and thesis writing and workshops on research commmunication, including PhD proposal.

I have specialised in the design and delivery of programmes that improve international students’ academic literacies, criticality and reflexivity. My UCL teaching career has brought me to teach in various settings such as Florence (Erasmus exchange), Astana, Doha, and Baghdad (with the Nahrein Network).

I hold a UCL Provost Teaching Award and an HEA Senior Fellow.
