Andrew’s principal interests are the archaeology of early medieval societies in north-western Europe, especially Britain during the period AD700-1200, and the archaeology of standing buildings. Recent research themes include the archaeology of governance, the geography of burial in the landscape of early medieval England and the nature of physical, temporal and social boundaries as expressed in the archaeological record. Andrew is particularly interested in the methodologies employed by archaeologists working in documented periods. He is PI of the Landscapes of Governance project: a three-year interdisciplinary research project funded by the Leverhulme Trust (2009-12), bringing archaeology, place-names and written sources together in a national study of early medieval assembly sites. He was previously PI of the Leverhulme Trust-fundedBeyond the Burghal Hidage Project, which ran from 2005-8.
Andrew is co-ordinator of the following Institute courses:
ARCL1014 Introduction to Archaeology
ARCL2018 Early Medieval Archaeology of Britain
ARCL3038 Archaeological approaches to standing buildings
ARCLG004 Medieval Archaeology: select topics and current problems
