- Associate Professor: Comparative Social Science (Education and Social Outcomes)
- IOE - Education, Practice & Society
- UCL Institute of Education
I am an Associate Professor of Comparative Social Science at UCL Institute of Education, where I work in the Department of Education, Practice and Society. I am also the Director of the Centre for Global Youth, which I established in 2017.
I joined the IOE in 2013 as an ESRC Future Research Fellow and associate member of the LLAKES Research Centre. Prior to this, I was an Anglo-German Research Fellow at the University of Oxford (2010-2012) and a Senior Research Officer at the National Foundation for Educational Research (2008-2010). While at NFER, I played a leading role in the Citizenship Education Longitudinal Study (CELS), a large-scale, mixed-method evaluation of the new curriculum programme. I continued to play a leading role in CELS until the study's completion in 2017.

I am a sociologist of youth who uses mixed methods and interdisciplinary approaches to further our understanding of contemporary youth attitudes, identities, and life chances.
My current research focuses on:
- the relationship between place, resources, and aspirations for young people growing up in coastal towns.
- youth attitudes and identities after Brexit.
- youth mobility aspirations.
In past projects I have examined topics such as:
- the impact of citizenship education on youth political engagement and civic values
- the relationship between European citizenship and national citizenship education policies
- youth cosmopolitan practices and their contradictions
- young people's attitudes towards immigration
I am the Module Leader for two modules on the BA Education Studies: Youth in a Globalising World (Autumn term) and Youth Cultures and Youth Movements: historical and sociological perspectives (Spring term).
I am currently supervising three PhD students on topics such as: global citizenship education practice in South Korea; global citizenship education in the UAE; and leadership and international mindedness in international schools.
I welcome applications from prospective PhD students that are interested in conducting research on the sociology of youth, and in particular, on youth aspirations, youth mobility or youth policy.
