Alvena completed her PhD in Tissue Engineering at UCL where she investigated mechanisms of collagen tissue growth during herniation. Following that, she was a Research Associate at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, working on the development and clinical manufacture of novel stem cell-based therapies which are soon to be used in patients with blinding corneal disease. In 2016, Alvena was awarded a UCL Bogue fellowship to carry out independent research at Harvard Medical School. Her particular expertise lies in utilising aligned collagen tissue models to study cell-matrix interactions in health and disease as well as biomechanical characterisation of human tissues and materials.
My research focuses on the development of 3D biomimetic in vitro collagen tissue models that mimic the structural and mechanical properties of native tissues. I am currently utilising these models to study cell-matrix interactions of healthy and hernia fibroblasts and to perform pre-clinical testing of commercial surgical meshes.
I am also interested in discovering frugal approaches to address healthcare problems and currently working towards the development of an affordable, biomimetic surgical mesh for abdominal wall repair. My expertise lies in correlating biological behaviour of cells to biomechanical properties.
Alvena is co-Programme Director of a cross-faculty undergraduate degree programme in Medical Sciences and Engineering. She leads modules on this programme and delivers lectures to BSc and MSc students across the Faculty, on a variety of topics including Tissue Engineering, Stem Cell Therapies, Gut Physiology, and Professional Medical Practice.
Alvena also supervises PhD, MSc and BSc students on laboratory research projects.
