Professor Leung is Professor of Dental Education and Head of the Department of Continuing Professional Development(CPD) at University College London Eastman Dental Institute (UCLEDI).
He is Programme Director for the MSc in Restorative Dental Practice (RDP) at the Eastman Dental Institute and is on the UCL Academic Board.
Professor Leung’s areas of expertise are in integrated restorative based total patient care and innovations in dental education. His main pedagogic research are in novel teaching techniques and assessment methodologies, and the development of effective feedback tools to help facilitate high quality teaching and learning.
Professor Leung is the Academic Lead and Chief Examiner in Clinical Skills (Dental Manikin) for the Overseas Registrations Examination (ORE) for the UK General Dental Council (GDC), having been Academic Lead since 2016 and an Examiner since 2004. At UCLEDI, he examines the MSc and the Postgraduate Diploma in Restorative Dental Practice, the MSc in Sports Dentistry and the Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Dental Aesthetics. He has successfully supervised over 90 Masters' Dissertations to-date.
Professor Leung has an extensive & successful innovation and change management leadership portfolio in Dentistry, particularly on leading curricula development, novel global on-line assessments, inverted hybrid learning and specialist training programme collaborations across the continents.
Professor Leung is Immediate Past Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), having served as Dean between 2020-2023. He was on the RCSI Surgical and Postgraduate Faculties Board. He is a member of the Faculty of Dentistry Board and served as an Executive on the education, finance and scientific committees. He was Chairman of the FDGS/MGDS Examinations and the MFD/Diploma of Primary Care Dentistry Examinations. He has an extensive postgraduate teaching, assessment and curriculum development profile in the UK, Ireland, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Jordan, Sudan, Qatar and Sweden.
Professor Leung is a recipient of the 2017 Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) Excellence in Dental Education Mature Career Educator Award. He has been co-chairman of the ADEE Special Interests Group (SIG) on Feedback Practices and Assessments in Dental Education since 2018.
Professor Leung had been an under-graduate and post-graduate clinical teacher at King’s College London Dental Institute for 15 years, including 6 years as Deputy Director of the Maurice Wohl Dental Practice Centre at the Department of Primary Dental Care.
