Research Summary

Throughout my career I have welcomed opportunities to undertake Practitioner Research (PR) and to explore developing areas of education. I believe that PR is an extremely powerful and effective way to  learn professionally and enhance practice.

My research foci have include science (organo-metallic chemistry, mathematical modelling, geochemistry and geophysics) and a wide range of educational research areas (curriculum and assessment development, science and mathematics pedagogy, professional learning and leadership).

My current research interests include:
  • ITE provision and its effectiveness
  • Creative and critical thinking pedagogies (primary and secondary)
  • Metacognition and Self-regulation development through science learning
  • Propagation of misconceptions in science and mathematics (primary and secondary)
  • Development and evaluation of effective science pedagogies (particularly integration of practical)
  • Leadership (relationships between middle and senior leaders, science/STEM leadership)
  • Novel ways to blende science, English and mathematics learning
  • Performance management alternatives
  • Consequences of online learning environments

Teaching Summary

My career in teaching has been very extensive and I feel privileged to have been able to teach across all educational phases, from exploring science with reception children to supervising adults at both MA and PhD levels.  Along this journey I have been fortunate to lead three science teams and one mathematics team and to work with several senior teams as a Deputy Headteacher, often under challenging circumstances. I have had considerable success in SLT, working with colleagues in curriculum and assessment development, teaching and learning, whole-school literacy, Inclusion and pastoral areas.
As and Advanced Skills teacher (AST), I provided primary and secondary colleagues, at all career stages, with professional learning opportunities focused on leadership development, curriculum and assessment design, inclusivity, science and mathematics pedagogy, literacy and language in science.

I have extensive experience creating and providing face-to-face, online synchronous and asynchronous learning through my work with the Royal Society of Chemistry, Association of Science Education, STEM Learning and my roles at UCL.
