A recently CCM IOE seed funded research project on the experience of refugees and asylum seekers seeking access to Higher Education forms the basis of a current UCL Public Policy Fellowship (2022) in which I am seeking to develop engagement pathways with policy makers to reduce barriers to HE for refugees and asylum seekers.
I am an established lecturer working across under graduate and post graduate modules, with programme and module leadership responsibilities. I am also an ECR and a doctoral researcher at UCL IOE. There are three strands to my research:
- Pedagogical research in which I have set out to explore L2 dialogic pedagogy as a means to facilitate critical auto-ethnographic poetry which centres the voices of Refugees and Asylum Seekers.
- Applied Ethnopoetic analysis, (a linguistic ethnography technique) in which I seek recognition of the voices of Refugees and Asylum Seekers as marginalised narrators
- Poetic Inquiry/Poetry as a Research Method and Output.
- Thematically my work is concerned with 'Seeking Home' (in the context of the Hostile Environment) and within that frame also with 'Seeking Access' to Higher Education.
I have also carried out small scale pedagogical research projects on
- dialogic peer feedback processes and barriers
- embedded collaboration between an academic literacies specialist and a subject specialist (MFL ITE)
Before joining UCL IOE I worked as an MFL teacher and in Teaching and Learning Leadership. Throughout my career I have concerned myself with issues of equality of access to educational opportunities.
