Biography

I am a Professor of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) at the UCL IoE. My main specialisations are reading in a foreign language and the use of literature in teaching foreign and second languages. I started my EFL career as a secondary school teacher before coming to the UK to do my MA and PhD.

Personal country knowledge:
I have worked internationally in many countries, and have particular country knowledge of Israel, France, Germany and Chile, specifically in the policy and practice of Teaching English as a Foreign Language. I have run a large number of CPD workshops for teachers in these countries (as well as others) both on general methodological issues as well as on the use of literature in language teaching. I have also spoken extensively at ELT conferences in countries such as Chile, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany and have worked with many EFL teachers throughout the world. In second semester of 2017-2018 I was Ottilie-Wildermuth Visiting Chair of TEFL at the University of Tübingen in Germany, and in September-November 2019 I taught at the University of Szeged in Hungary.

Languages spoken and written:
French (Intermediate), German (Intermediate), Hebrew (advanced)
