Biography

As Director of the CLOSER programme (Cohort and Longitudinal Studies Enhancement Resources) I am responsible for a range of activities aimed at maximising the use, value and impact of the UK's longitudinal studies. See www.closer.ac.uk for further details.

My wider research and teaching focuses on social and political attitudes and behaviour and how these are changing over time. I also have an interest in comparative survey research, and survey research methods more generally.

Before joining UCL Institute of Education, I led a research team at NatCen Social Research and designed, resourced and carried out a range of commissioned and grant-funded social research studies, with a particular focus on survey research.

Teaching Summary

I am module lead for Society and Social Change, a core module in the BSc Social Sciences and Social Sciences with Quantitative Methods 2016/17 and 2017/18.

This first year module aims to provide students with an understanding of international differences across a range of important policy-relevant areas, from family life to employment to political engagement, and the key factors that underpin these differences. It then focuses in detail on the UK to explore how it has changed (and remained stable) over time, exploring the factors that underpin this and their consequences, particularly in terms of public policy.
