Alina is a quantitative social demographer with expertise of handling large datasets, including population registers and longitudinal survey data. Her research interests include a range of topics across social demography and reproductive epidemiology, including life course, families and fertility, transition to adulthood, mental health, social inequalities, and residential mobility. Alina is currently working on European Research Council Grant to study the effects of Medically Assisted Reproduction (MAR) on children and adults (MARTE). She investigates adverse maternal and birth outcomes (i.e., risk of low birth weight and prematurity) associated with MAR using Utah population register data (Utah Population Database). Alina also examines the effects of fertility treatments on partnership stability and maternal mental health in Finland using population register data.
Alina was awarded with ESRC and Advanced Quantitative Methods Scholarship for her PhD research which she completed at the University of Liverpool in 2019. In her PhD, Alina investigated how various life course trajectories (partnerships, education and employment, residential mobility) of young people in the UK have changed across cohorts born 1974-1990 using Understanding Society data.
Alina is passionate about the impact of research on society and policy-making. Her previous role in the Policy Unit of Understanding Society (UKHLS) included undertaking academic and non-academic research to support the needs of policy-makers and third sector organisations. Some of her projects included investigating mothers’ and fathers’ employment trajectories and occupational outcomes in the UK (project in partnership with the Government Equalities Office); exploring the impact of childcare prices on women’s labour market outcomes (project with the Coram Family and Childcare Trust); and investigating the impact of housing circumstances on mental health and wellbeing (project with the Mind charity).
Alina is keen on wider dissemination of her research findings. Her work was covered in multiple media outlets, including BBC Worklife, The Times, ITV News, The Medical News.
