I joined UCL Institute of Education in 2016 after relocating from King's College London with Professor Becky Francis' team working on the 'Best Practice in Grouping Students' project. Our research focused on investigating effective methods of grouping secondary students to improve educational engagement and attainment, with particular attention to the outcomes of students from disadvantaged backgrounds (see Francis et al., 2020, Reassessing 'ability' grouping: Improving practice for equity and attainment, Routledge).

I have also previously completed a number of postdoctoral projects on the topics of migrant students' identities and educational experiences. This included two projects at King's College London (funded by a Newton International Fellowship and the British Academy Visiting Scholar Scheme), and a project at the University of Porto (funded by the Portuguese Foundation of Science & Technology).

Before completing my PhD at the University of Cambridge, I worked at George Soros' Open Society Foundation in Ukraine in the area of educational reform and with a particular focus on equal and transparent access to higher education institutions.

Research Summary

My research area is sociology of education, students' and teachers' identities and inequalities in educational settings.

I currently work on two teacher retention projects, as well as a large-scale study investigating the impact of setting versus mixed attainment grouping on student outcomes in mathematics in secondary schools.

I am the PI on the British Academy / Leverhulme Small Research Grant funded project 'Retention of teachers from minority ethnic groups in disadvantaged schools'.

Teaching Summary

I am a lecturer on the MA in Education programme at the Department of Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment. I also teach topics related to sociology of education and research methodologies on BA and MA modules across UCL IOE, and I am involved in supervision of postgraduate and undergraduate students.
