Appointment
  • UCL Teaching Fellow
  • Faculty of Laws
  • UCL SLASH
Biography

Joe Atkinson joined the Faculty as a PhD Candidate in 2015. He holds an LLM from the London School of Economics, and a BA (Jurisprudence) from the University of Oxford. Since 2016 he has co-convened the UCL Legal Philosophy Forum. He has previously chaired UCL's Work in Progress Forum (2016-17), and sat on Editorial Board of the UCL Journal of Law and Jurisprudence (2015-16).

Joe has undertaken legal and policy research in a freelance capacity for a range of charities, academics, barristers and politicians.  Prior to joining UCL he worked as a Researcher and Political Advisor for the Labour Party, during which time he was responsible for advising on a range of legislative and policy issues.

Research Summary

Joe's main areas of research include theoretical and legal issues related to labour and employment law, labour market regulation, and human rights. In particular, he is interested in examining the aims of regulatory frameworks operating in the workplace and labour market, and the effectiveness of the existing law for achieving these aims.

His PhD thesis covers theoretical and practical aspects of the relationship between human rights and labour law; examining the potential for justifying labour law through human rights based arguments, and the implications of adopting a human rights perspective on labour law.

Teaching Summary

Joe is a Teaching Fellow at UCL, responsible for delivering tutorials on tort and employment law, and also teaches tort at Queen Mary University of London. He has given lectures and seminars to A-level students on human rights law as part of UCL's widening participation schemes, and has been a guest lecturer on the LLM 'Human Rights at Work' module.
