Biography
Born 1943, Dunfermline, Scotland. 1964 B.Sc. in Physiology. 1970 Ph.D. in Physiology, UCL. 1972-2008, Lecturer/Professor in Physiology at UCL. During this period, held short visiting posts at Physiology Dept, University of North Carolina; Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada; Max-Planck-Society/W G Kerckhoff-Institut, Bad Nauheim, Germany and Research Institute for Environmental Medicine, University of Nagoya, Japan. Author or co‑author of 49 full papers, 11 symposium papers, 20 review articles, 11 text‑book chapters and one book (Narvani, A.A.,Thomas, P. & Lynn, B. (2006) Key topics in sports medicine. Routledge, London). Main past research on pain physiology, notably pain receptors in skin and non-specific upper limb pain (“RSI”). Role as Director of the UCL MSc School of Human Health and Performance from 1999-2008, led to an interest in exercise physiology and in the relation of physical fitness to human health. This is a continuing interest.
