Biography

I was the first Project Co-ordinator of the now internationally renowned Twins Early Development Study (TEDS; 1995-2000) at the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings' College London. There, I completed my PhD in Psychology and Behavioural Genetics and my post-doctoral training. I became a Senior Researcher at the National Academy for Parenting Research before joining faculty at University of Sussex (2012-2017) and at Goldsmiths, University of London (2017-2020). I came to IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society in July 2020. I have diverse research and applied experience, including sustained core roles over many years in UK cohort studies (TEDS; CoTEDS; Early Life Cohort) as well as working with educational and clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, and family practitioners. I am Chair of IOE’s Mental Health and Wellbeing in Education Network, Director of the NurtureLab, and lead UCL's contribution to the International Center for Coparenting Policy and Research. I am Advisory Board/Steering Committee Member for UCL's Institute of Mental Health, UCL’s Children and Young People's Mental Health Group, and for ICH GOS Mental Health Strategic Initiative. I am also Scientific Advisor for the Accessible Genetics Consortium, and a member of the UKRI Talent Panel College.

Research Summary

My research focuses on children's socio-emotional and behavioural adjustment and mental health, with specific emphasis on the role of family relationships. I study longitudinal, often bidirectional, mechanisms important for children's adjustment using large and small scale studies, including cohort studies and genetically-informed designs. I also develop novel assessment tools that aim to maximise research detail at scale, while minimising our carbon footprint. My online parent-child interaction task has been twice nominated by the Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health for impact, and is used all over the world. Please contact me if you would like to use it!

I am interested in receiving applications for PhD supervision from excellent students in areas related to my work in the Nurture Lab. Please get in touch if you have an MA/MSc in Psychology, a strong academic background including quantitative analysis skills, and enjoy academic writing. You are likely to require self-funding, but we can also explore options to apply for funding. There is information on UCL funding options as well as the IOE Centenary Doctoral Studentship for those from low and middle income countries.
Teaching Summary

I am Module co-Lead for two masters-level modules (Social and Individual Development, Core Topics in the Psychology of Education). I also teach on several other masters-level modules.
