Biography

I am based in The Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, where I am an Associate Professor and hold the leadership position of Director of Education. I am also Module Coordinator for two modules: a third-year undergraduate module, Architectural Research III (BARC0098), a full and final-year module on the BSc Architectural and Interdisciplinary Studies programme; and the 4th year History and Theory module, Advanced Architectural Studies (BARC0009), on the MArch Architecture (Part 2) programme. I also hold an Honorary Senior Lectureship at University College Cork.

Previously I was based in the UCL Arena Centre for Research-based Education, including as Associate Director. There I supported education development in The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment, taught on the UCL Arena staff development programmes, and was Programme Director for the leadership programme UCL Leading Change in Education.

Research Summary

My research interests are diverse and multi-disciplinary. Most recently my work focused on the intersection of research-based education and the holistic university physical environment. I led a small research project looking at research-based education and learning spaces, both within and beyond traditional settings, as well as another project measuring the impact of the university's research-based education strategy (UCL Connected Curriculum). In addition, previous research has focused on the themes of improving the student experience, peer assessment, researcher development, social justice and equality, minorities and diversity in space.

My doctoral research (completed in 2013) was situated at the intersection of gender studies, queer theory, geographies of sexualities, and architectural history. The work focused on the production of domestic space. It employed a feminist, queer theorised and political approach to architectural history, specifically by focusing on sexual minorities’ experiences of domesticity in London. Publications in this area are under my previous surname (Pilkey), while education-focused research is published under Carnell.

Teaching Summary

I am Module Coordinator for two modules: a third-year undergraduate module, Architectural Research III (BARC0098), a full and final-year module on the BSc Architectural and Interdisciplinary Studies programme; and the 4th year History and Theory module, Advanced Architectural Studies (BARC0009), on the MArch Architecture (Part 2) programme. I also play a role on the Part 3 programme (Unit 1). I supervise MArch Architecture (Part 2) fifth-year thesis students as well as occasionally Bachelor of Arts and Sciences dissertation students. In 2016 my Part 2 supervisee, Robin Farmer, received a dissertation medal commendation from The Royal Institute of British Architects, for his work, A flâneur’s guide to boystown: Performativity, pride and place. I am also a PhD supervisor currently for two students who are both researching Learning Spaces - one in The Bartlett School of Architecture (second supervisor), and another at University College Cork (adjunct supervisor).

In the past I have taught on the year 2 BSc Architecture History and Theory module,  on the UCL Arena staff development programmes and led many workshops across UCL (including Developing as a UCL Doctoral Supervisor and Personal Tutoring at UCL), and was Programme Director for the leadership programme UCL Leading Change in Education.
