Research Summary

I am interested in how altered sensory experience and language shapes the brain, and how auditory and visual input are integrated to support communication in deaf children and adults with cochlear implants. I use electroencephalography (EEG), functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and behavioural measures to examine how the brain adapts after cochlear implantation and integrates sensory information. In my current research, funded by the Wellcome Trust, I work with Prof Mairéad MacSweeney at the Visual Communication Group and the Deafness Cognition and Language Research Centre, UCL. I am currently collaborating with, and based at, the Human Vision and Eye Movement Lab, University of British Columbia, where I am working with Prof Jason Barton to examine face processing in deaf children.

Keywords: Audio-visual integration; Brain imaging; Cochlear implant; Cognition; Communication; Cross-modal; Deafness; Hearing; Multi-modal; Plasticity; Speech; Speechreading; Visual attention.
