I have over 25 years experience of teaching and training other educators, including in HE in the UK and overseas. I am interested in training or educating others to facilitate learning in various settings: overseas in developing countries, within the development education and global learning sector, and within Higher and Professional Education. I work with clinical educators, lecturers, teachers in schools and other independent trainers. I have worked with HE professionals from UK, Pakistan, China, Slovenia and Poland. I am assessor for UCL's Arena programme. As Associate Director of IOE's Development Education Research Centre, I have an interest in UCL's approaches to sustainability and the SDGs. I have served as a member of UCL's sustainability steering group and sustainable literacy group, aiming to increase the focus on sustainability in UCL's teaching offer.
I have research interests in education for global citizenship and related areas of development education / global learning, learning and teaching within higher education, and the education of professional educators. I have written on the professional development of teachers through CPD, and new university lecturers, as well as on distance supervision of dissertations. I have also researched within the development education / global learning field on work in FE colleges, the professional development of teachers in global learning, and the contribution of returned volunteers to development education. I am the editor of the International Journal of Development Education and Global Learning (established in 2008 by IOE's Development Education Research Centre), and Series Editor for Advances in GlobalCitizenship Education Policy and Practice. I am a member of Academic Network on Global Education andLearning (ANGEL).
I have worked at the Institute of Education since 2003 on various MA programmes. I am Programme Leader for the online MA Global Learning. I also am module leader on this MA and for the online module Learning and Working in International Contexts. I have also worked across UCL as Academic Director of UCL's Global Citizenship Programme from Sept 2017- Aug 2020. I am currently co-Academic Head of Learning and Teaching for the Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment department. I ran a European funded programme with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Poland, in collaboration with 4 other European universities, to develop the teaching of Polish university lecturers between 2018-2022. I have also recently collaborated on a research project for the police on what works in virtual and blended learning in order to inform their moves in this direction for training police officers. I supervise doctoral students in two main fields: development education / global learning / education for global citizenship and development of educators within higher and professional education.
