I started on my professional journey as a mathematician, and my passion for the discipline found resonance in my teaching of mathematics at all levels of education.
Prior to joining the UCL Institute of Education in September 2010, I taught pure mathematics at university level for 10 years, followed by six years teaching mathematics in secondary schools in London at KS3, KS4 and A-level. Since joining the UCL Institute of Education, I have worked as a mathematics educator, teaching on postgraduate courses (PGCE Secondary Mathematics and MA Mathematics Education) and supervising students at masters and EdD/PhD levels.
I am currently leading the very successful MA Mathematics Education programme, and in my role as Academic Head of Learning and Teaching (AHLT) I work towards developing the CPA department as a centre of excellence for all aspects of teaching and learning for all of our postgraduate taught students.
I have recently been appointed a member of the prestigious LMS Education Committee, which is involved in a wide range of activities from supporting mathematical education in schools, colleges and universities, to encouraging the public and young people to appreciate and engage with mathematics.
- Integration of digital technologies in mathematics teaching and learning - my main researchinterest centres around the development of teachers’ professional knowledgebase for teaching and the incorporation of the digital technology inmathematics lessons.
- Teachers knowledge for mathematics teaching
- Specialist and non-specialist mathematics teachers' identity - my interest onhow teachers’ mathematical and pedagogical knowledge are intertwined and howthey affect one's teaching - Teacher Learning and Continuous Professional Development has led to research on identities of teachers who are becoming mathematics specialists - Teaching Out-of-Field Internationally.
- Subject Specialist Knowledge - I am part of the team leading the Subject Specialist Research Group (SSRG), which has a focus on researching the nature of subject-specific knowledge within the school curriculum and teacher education. I am particularly interested in how key practices of the discipline of mathematics could be (better) promoted and incorporated into school mathematics. Here is the webinar of the launch of What Should Schools Teach book, which introduces the chapter on Mathematics.
