Biography

I am a Lecturer in Catastrophe Risk Engineering with a joint appointment in the UCL's Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering (CEGE) and the UCL's Institute for Risk & Disaster Reduction (IRDR). Prior to joining UCL, I have worked as a Lecturer in Structural Engineering & Catastrophe Risk Modelling in the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at the Newcastle University, UK, where I am now an Associate Lecturer, as a Catastrophe Risk Modeller in the Catastrophe Risk Engineering group of Applied Insurance Research (AIR) Worldwide, San Francisco, USA, and as an Associate Research Scientist in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Irvine, USA.
I earned both my MSc in (Civil) Engineering Management (March 2007) and my PhD in Seismic Risk (December 2010) at the University of Naples Federico II, Italy.

Research Summary

My research focuses on the development and use of probabilistic and statistical tools for modelling and managing risk caused by extreme loads on the built environment, with emphasis on developing new tools for hazard-consistent seismic input assessment, engineering applications of earthquake early warning systems, structural reliability and flood risk assessment.
I have authored over 60 journal and conference papers and I am Section Editor for the Encyclopaedia of Earthquake Engineering by Springer (Section: Seismic Risk Assessment), Guest Editor for the ASCE-ASME Journal of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems (Part A: Civil Engineering), Review Editor for Frontiers in Interdisciplinary Climate Studies and Frontiers in Built Environment/Earthquake Engineering (journals partnered with Nature Publishing Group), referee for over 15 international journals/books series/conferences proceedings, and I am involved in several international research programs dealing with earthquake engineering and catastrophe risk modelling. I am in the scientific committee or have organized minisymposia for international conferences worldwide, including the 11th International Conference on Structural Safety & Reliability (ICOSSAR), Columbia University, New York, NY, USA, June 16-20, 2013, the ASCE 2nd International Conference on Vulnerability and Risk Analysis and Management (ICVRAM2014) & 6th International Symposium on Uncertainty Modelling and Analysis (ISUMA2014), Liverpool, UK, July 13-15, 2014, and the 12th International Conference on Applications of Statistics and Probability in Civil Engineering (ICASP), Vancouver, Canada, July 12-15, 2015.
