Biography
I come from Brazil, one of the most diverse countrieson the planet. I started my career as a biologist, aiming to understand the threats to nature and biodiversityin the country. I did my undergraduate in the Federal University of CampoGrande, Mato Grosso do Sul state. Luckily Campo Grande is close to the Pantanalwetland, one of the largest wetlands on the planet, and I was able to spend my holidaysand a large percentage of my time working in the Pantanal. I became an internfor the Embrapa Pantanal wildlife management lab and started to with my dearfriend and colleague Dr.Walfrido Tomas.
AfterI graduated, my first job was to help a local NGO to identify mammal speciesthat occurred close to the National Park of the Pantanal. It was my first job,and I started to experience the conflict between local communities andconservation initiatives. After this first job, I decided to work withlocal communities.
Duringthis period (mid-2010s) the Brazilian government was investing in scientificresearch, and, supported by great scientists in Brazil such as Dr. ClaudioPadua and Dr. Suzana Pádua, I was very lucky to be offered a scholarship by theBrazilian government to undertake a PhD at University College London with Dr.Katherine Homewood. It was the first time I was leaving the country.
In September 2022, I returned to UCL as a Lecturer.
Research Summary
My research is focused on socio-ecological systems. I am interested on the interactions between humans and nature, especially in the relation between governance structures and unpredictable environmental dynamics. I have been working on land tenure, property rights and use and access of natural resources by small scale communities. Most of this research has been carried out with my collegue Dr. Mark Dyble.
My research projects include:
-Sustainability of inland fisheries in the Pantanal wetland, Brazil
-Governance of socio-ecological systems
-Sustainable cattle ranching in the Pantanal wetland, Brazil
-Biodiversity participatory monitoring in the Amazon
-Extreme citizen science in the Pantanal wetland
I am also interested in other aspects of conservation biology, such as ecological thresholds and occupancy of large mammals; evolution (e.g. social network analysis) and psychology (e.g. Theory of planned beharviour)
