I completed my DPhil in particle physics at Oxford in 2019, but spent most of 2017-2018 attached to Kamioka Observatory in Japan. I decided to look for research work in a more applied area, and took a position as a data scientist at the British Antarctic Survey AI Lab. There, I developed skills working with global climate model output, and an interest in human heat stress and climate change.
- Using machine learning to extract the location and extent of green roofs in London. Assessment of potential for green roof retrofit using LIDAR and GIS.
- Bias correction of regional climate model output with crowdsourced weather observations. (Brousse et al 2022)
- Investigating personal exposure to heat. Developing methods to better account for inter-personal variations in risk of overheating. Including the effects of the urban heat island, physiology, and buildings.
- STRIDE - housing features and risk of injury in children
- UCL Health of the Public Small Grant. Collaboration between IEDE and Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health.
- I extracted housing data from energy performance certificates. Working with epidemiologists, I estimated the impact of housing characteristics on risk of injury in children using regression of hospital episode statistics for a birth cohort. Paper in preparation.
- Engagement with the Met Office Academic Partnership
- In a previous role at the British Antarctic Survey
- Post-processing and bias correction of global climate model outputs.
- Research into the economic impacts of climate change on outdoor work (Simpson et al 2021).
- Engagement with local stakeholders, generating an evidence report for a local climate change committee (Aines et al 2021).
- For the courses *Health Wellbeing and Sustainable Buildings*, and *Environmental Design and Engineering*. Projects focussed on the urban heat island, making use of GIS and ENVI-Met.
- *Health Wellbeing and Sustainable Buildings*, University College London, 2022-23
- Worked with PGTAs to update and improve teaching materials on statistics.
- Light and Lighting MSc 2022-23
- Developed Python teaching resources.
- Gave drop-in sessions for students to discuss use of statistics in their dissertations.
