Research Summary

I am currently working on the NERC funded BIOTA project which aims to determine the interactions and trade-offs between biodiversity, agriculture and trade. I have been looking at how characteristics of the surrounding landscape, including landscape composition and complexity, influence local biodiversity within cropland systems.

I am also interested in what drives insect biodiversity change and have been looking at the interactions between land use, use intensity and climate change and their impact on insect biodiversity.  This work has lead to an interest in how biodiversity change linked to these drivers may impact ecosystem functions and services.

These areas of research have been exploring biodiversity change using the PREDICTs database.

Outside of the BIOTA project, I am also interested in large-scale biodiversity monitoring, the generation of biodiversity indicators, and the use of occurrence records to determine large-scale species trends.  I am particularly interested in patterns of biodiversity of understudied taxa such as invertebrates.

Teaching Summary

Since October 2020 I have been 50% teaching, having received a teaching secondment to assist with teaching during the COVID pandemic.  This has mainly involved the design and delivery of face-to-face sessions for the undergraduate course. These skills based sessions have included data interpretation, essay writing and coding in R.

Co-supervision of Master students:

- Charlotte Benham, CBER, 2021: Responses of biodiversity to natural habitat across taxa.

- Peter McCann, CBER, 2020: Impacts of the interactions between land use and climate change on local insect biodiversity.

I am currently a workshop leader working with the Grant Museum and UCL Culture to deliver workshops on animal movement and robotics to secondary school children aged 11 - 18.
