Biography

Charlene A. Murphy is currently a European Research Council research associate at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London on the Comparative Pathways to Agriculture (ComPAg) project. She is currently undertaking research on South Asian archaeobotany from the Neolithic to the historic period throughout the subcontinent.

She completed her doctorate at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London in 2011 on Mediterranean Archaeobotany, focusing on the city of Pompeii entitled “Pompeii, a changing city: the archaeobotanical assemblage of Regione VI, insula I.” She completed her master’s degree in Anthropology at Trent University on North American archaeobotany and her honours Bachelor of Science at the University of Toronto, St. Michael’s College.

To date she has undertaken archaeobotanical fieldwork in Italy, Scotland, Romania, Turkey, Iraq, Canada, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Research Summary
My current research is focused on the archaeobotany of South Asia. I am also working and consulting on projects in Italy and Serbia. 
Teaching Summary
I have taught environmental recovery in the field to undergraduate and graduate students for a number of years. I have assisted in the Archaeobotanical Intensive practice course at the Institute of Archaeology, UCL.
