Chris Savory graduated with a first-class honours degree in Chemistry from the University of Oxford in 2014, after which he moved to UCL for postgraduate research into emerging solar absorber materials under the supervision of Prof. David Scanlon. After completing his PhD in 2018, he undertook postgraduate work in the Faraday Institution's Multiscale Modelling Fast-Start Project investigating the electronic and defect properties of high nickel-content Li-ion cathodes. In 2021, he started his Ramsay Memorial Fellowship at the Department of Chemistry at UCL, where he is now looking into solid-state phosphors for next-generation lighting.
Research Themes
Research Summary
My research concerns the use of first-principles quantum mechanical methods in studying the electronic structure and properties of crystalline materials, with aim of finding new materials for renewable energy generation and storage, including photovoltaics, Li-ion batteries, thermoelectrics and solid-state phosphors. Accurate computational predictions, paired with collaborative experimental effort, can be of great usage, and so theoretical approaches that include effects beyond those of standard methods are also of susbtantial interest.
Teaching Summary
I have been involved in small-group teaching throughout my time at UCL, including as Lab Demonstrator (2nd year Inorganic Chemistry) and Tutor (1st year Inorganic Chemistry). In 2019, I joint-lectured the 'Computational Chemistry for Beginners' course at Diamond Light Source. In 2021/22, I have covered part of the module CHEM0012: Materials Chemistry, and am currently primary supervisor to one MSc student.
