Claire studied Human Sciences at St Catherine's College, Oxford University and then studied for a Masters in Health Promotion Sciences at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1992/3. She completed her PhD in epidemiology in 1998, having worked on the European Collaborative Study (ECS) on HIV-infected pregnant women and their children since 1994. Claire held a Wellcome Trust Research Career Development Fellowship (2007-2012). She is a board member of the PENTA Foundation, a not-for-profit organization running an independent paediatric infectious diseases network across Europe, on the Advisory Board of the Antiretroviral Pregnancy Registry and member of the Infectious Diseases in Pregnancy Screening Programme Advisory Group, Public Health England.


Claire's research is focused on infectious diseases
epidemiology in relation to maternal and child health, with a particular
emphasis on HIV, viral hepatitis and zika virus. She leads several cohort
and surveillance studies on HIV, including the UK and Ireland National Study of HIV in Pregnancy and Childhood (NSHPC), the European Collaborative Study on HIV-infected pregnant
women and their children, the Ukraine Paediatric HIV Cohort Study, and the pregnancy component of the European Pregnancy and Paediatric HIV Cohort Collaboration (EPPICC). Specific interests include the use and safety of antiretroviral drugs in pregnancy and early life, and the HIV epidemic in Eastern
Europe and Central Asia. Claire is epidemiological lead for a national audit of Hepatitis B in pregnancy, in collaboration with Public Health England, and for PENTAHep paediatric HCV studies in Ukraine and Russia. Another research area relates to the vertical transmission and paediatric outcomes of zika, dengue and chikungunya virus infection, within a Horizon 2020 project ZIKAction which is being conducted in South America and the Caribbean.
Claire teaches on several undergraduate and postgraduate modules including the Epidemiology for Child Health and the Immunisation and Infectious Diseases modules for the MSc in Paediatrics and Child Health, the Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases module for the MSc in Applied Infectious Disease Epidemiology (AIDE), and the Acute and Chronic Infectious Diseases module for the BSc in Population Health. She has supervised student projects for iBSc in Paediatrics, BSc in Human Sciences, MSc in Global Health and Development, MSc in Population Health, MSc in Paediatrics and Child Health and MSc in AIDE. She also teaches regularly on international courses of the European Society for Paediatric Infectious Disease / Paediatric European Network for the Treatment of AIDS (PENTA), Tr@inforPedHIV.
