Biography

I am Reader in Culture and Communications in the Department of Culture, Communication and Media. My work focuses on the significance of new technologies for knowledge and identity in educational settings. I have investigated how e-learning affects what constitutes teaching and learning, how gender is identified in game playing and game making in schools and in homes, and how simulation in medical education re-shapes what is learned about clinical practice. A particular focus is on the use of simulations and games in educational interventions, in schools, higher education and workplaces. Methodologically, I draw on discourse analysis and social semiotics, as well as psychosocial approaches, to study how technologies are used in practice. I have particular experience of ethnographic and observational approaches, to study the use of technology naturalistically, as experienced in practice. Through research, I aim to support the development of more effective technology-enhanced educational practices.

I have carried out research projects funded by bodies including ESRC, EPRSC, the London Deanery and other charitable organisations, as well as done consultancy work for governmental and international non-governmental organisations.
