In her capacity as a Public Health Physician and Epidemiologist for various research institutions over the last 15 years, Dr Renzi has pursued an interdisciplinary approach to address issues of public health relevance in different areas, including projects on outcomes research, access to healthcare, treatment adherence, and clinical epidemiology.
In particular, on cancer prevention and early detection, Dr Renzi's work has focused on the investigation of factors associated with timely access to evidence-based healthcare and patient outcomes. Dr Renzi is especially interested in the evaluation of diagnostic pathways and factors influencing timely diagnosis of cancer, including clinical, social, behavioural and health-care related factors. Her recent work has focused on the evaluation of the impact of previous diagnostic investigations with an ‘all clear’ diagnosis on subsequent help-seeking for cancer symptoms and diagnostic delays. Moreover, she is currently using primary care, secondary care, routes to diagnosis and cancer registration data for examining symptomatic presentations during the pre-diagnostic period in order to understand if there are opportunities for reducing emergency presentations and diagnose cancer earlier. She is also interested in evaluating possible inequalities in early diagnosis.
Previously, Dr Renzi has conducted in-depth evaluations of public reporting of hospital performance indicators and subsequent changes in quality of care. In the past she has worked on projects focusing on sexual behaviours and the prevention and early detection of AIDS/HIV, including a European Concerted Action on sexual behaviour and the risk of AIDS and STDs.
