I qualified as a Primary teacher in 1986 completing a BEd (Hons) at a ‘Teacher Training College’ in Reading. For the next 20 years I worked in a range of rural and urban schools in Hampshire, Reading and West Berkshire as a class teacher, head of department, deputy head and headteacher.

I spent six years working for Reading Borough Council setting up and contributing to the phase two SureStart Children’s centre programme focusing on provision for 0-5-year-olds and their families in areas of deprivation in the West of the town. I was also able to contribute to the Extended Schools programme working with a small cluster of primary and secondary schools. During this time, I completed an NPQ with the impressive title ‘National Professional Qualification in Integrated Centre Leadership’ which sparked my interest in adult learning and development.    

Between 2008 and 2014 I was a facilitator and lead facilitator teaching the NPQICL programme for the Universities of Nottingham, Chichester and the Institute of Education until programme funding ceased. 

In 2014 I was fortunate to join the Institute of Education as a tutor on the Teach First programme. I have since worked at the IOE as a Programme Leader and Course Leader on the Teach First programme completing a PGDip in Social Science research methodology and developing a strong interest in quality and inclusivity within Initial Teacher Education.  

I was recently appointed to the role of Head if ITE, which is a privileged position, enabling me to work with very talented, experienced, and committed colleagues to ensure that IOE provision is outstanding across all our programmes and subjects.  

One of my key interests is as a volunteer at my local Secondary School supporting the 'Flying Pigs' a group which runs a summer play scheme for children in Tinteranii, Moldova raising aspirations for young people aged 3-15 in the poorest country in Europe (Covid19 permitting). My interview for a position at the IOE was conducted via Skype from the house of my hosts Zena and Gheorghe Bunescu!
